GREのための勉強をしているのですが、語彙を増やすためと思い、適当な著作を探していたところ、この歴史的名作に突き当たりました。 何故これを選んだかというと、タイトルの有名さと本としての薄さにつきます。 しかし中身はやたらと濃い。 ヘミングウェイ的マチズモが勝利を収めたかと思いきや、結局全ては水の泡になり、自分は幸運すぎたのだという悟りにも似た思いと傷つき疲れ切った体を携えて漁から帰ってくる主人公の姿が、いくつもの戦場を渡り歩き、生き残ったヘミングウェイ自身の姿と重なります。 読了後、戦場カメラマンのロバート・キャパが撮ったヘミングウェイの写真を見ましたが、その顔がサンチアゴに思えて仕方がありませんでした。 タフだけと、にがあまずっぱい読書をしたいなら、是非。 小学生の時に一度読んだ事がありますが、その時は特に何も印象に残りませんでした。 今から１０年ほど前に、英語で読んでみましたが、非常に感動しました。老人の人生の描写の素晴らしさ、老人のもとで働く少年の老人を尊敬し、いたわる気持ち、その美しさに胸を打たれました。 これが世界的な名著というのがこの時初めて実感できました。 読んでいる中で、ジョーディマジオの話しが出てくるのですが、何だか急に伝説のプレーヤーが身近に感じられ嬉しく思いました。 小説も読む年令によって感じ方が違うんですね。１０年後にまた読んで見たい小説です。 。 I really enjoyed the movie (1990) with Anthony Quinn as Santiago. So I decided it was time to read the book. Well I found the book and the movie paralleled pretty well. How ever I was getting bored with the book. He kept going on and on about Joe Dimaggio’s bone spur. There were a few places that made me squeamish. One such place is when he gutted a dolphin and had his face stuck in it. The story is too short to go into detail without revealing the surprises; however it is about (you guessed it) an old fisherman, that should be over the hill, going out to sea from Cuba to catch fish.
