ちょっと高いなあ、と思っても絶対に後悔はしません。こんな充実したトラックばかりのボックスなんてそうそうない。すごい！すっばらしい。衝撃的。
サムクックが、ソウルミュージックが、ブラックミュージックが、（もうどれでもいい）、好きで、ゴスペル時代をもしよく知らない人がいたら、絶対に買いです。絶対です！録音もストレートでサムの縦横無尽な歌心、のびやかで広々とした歌がイヤと言うくらい 笑 CD３枚に詰め込まれてます。
「One Night Stand: Live At The Harlem Square Club 1963」はライブCDとして本当に素晴らしいものですが、このライブのサムが好きなら間違いなくゴスペル時代のCDは心の宝物になるだろうと思います。
優秀なベスト盤として評価が高いにも関わらず、廃盤になったままの「The man and his music」のトップを飾るサムのゴスペル曲の白眉「Touch the hem of his garment」ですらこのボックスに収められてるものは圧倒的に素晴らしい。ちょっと気取ったような（それでも素晴らしいのですが）、すかしたような 笑 ところがまるきりない。
サムクックの歌声はスマートすぎて、オーティスのザラついた声の方が、、というソウルファンの人たちも是非。そんなもんじゃない強烈なライブテイク（Disc3の最後に名曲Nearer to theeの９分近くに及ぶ背筋も凍るような記録が入ってます。サムの恐ろしいほどのシャウト！すごすぎます）を聴いてほしい。
結論。これはマスト！です。こればっかりは譲れないっす。
ああ、６０００円弱なんてなんて安いんだろう。激安！（聴いた後だから言えることではありますが 笑 ）
パンチがありながらスイートな歌い手、サム・クックによるポップ・クラシックは幅広いオーディエンスを獲得したが、その彼がソウル・スターラーズと共にスペシャルティ・レーベルに録音した音楽は、クック自身のベストであると同時にゴスペルの最高峰だ。1950年、偉大なR.H.ハリスに代わって19歳の若さでソウル・スターラーズに加わったクックは、その後ポップスの分野に持ちこむことになる独特のスタイルを身につけるが、相変わらず教会で歌っていたのである。ディスク1では、まだ原石のような1人の無名ボーカリストのむき出しの情熱が伝わってくる。ディスク2では、クックはもはやR.H.ハリスの補欠ではなく、独自の音楽性を放っている。ディスク3は、名ボーカリストとしての、また野心的なソングライター（「Touch the Hem of His Garment」は特に有名）としてのクックの成長ぶりを見せつける一方で、ソロ・アーティストとして世俗的な音楽へと向かう彼の姿をドキュメントしている。天の声にも似た83トラックを収録したセット中、「Come and Go to That Land」の未使用テイクは、ぜい肉をそぎ落としたアレンジが、後の「Sacred Steel」を予感させるし、ボーカルとオルガンの掛け合いを中心に展開する「All Right Now」は、ゴスペルのような高揚感をもつ。「Were You There?」の幾通りものテイクを聴くと、ごくありふれた素材を自分のものへと変えていくクックの手腕が分かる。最後の3つのトラックは、クックがライヴ演奏で放つ電撃的なインパクトを捕らえている。（Don McLeese, Amazon.com）
